Homemade Jimmy John’s Italian Night Club

The Sandwich

Years ago when I watched Bridesmaids, the one scene that stood out to me was the hungry bear scene which involved a sandwich filled with meats and cheeses. You’ll have to look up the scene on YouTube to understand what I’m saying. It’s still knee slapping hilarious. You will laugh. While I’ve never (ahem) had an intimate moment involving a sandwich, I did come across a hefty sandwich filled with meats and cheeses.

The Fillings

Filled with capicola, hard salami, and smoked ham, it is one delicious sandwich. And as I’ve gotten older and prices seem to keep increasing, I’ve taken to replicating my favorite fast foods at home. And this sandwich was first on my list. I will say this: Capicola (also called capocollo or gabagool) is difficult to find in the Texas Panhandle, but I was able to get my hands on some when it was included in a charcutier sampler at the grocery store.

The rest of the ingredients were easy enough to find and I did have Jimmy John’s menu for the other ingredients used in the sandwich. It was only after the fact I found out I could purchase their French bread and could have used that instead. Also, I substituted the red wine vinegar and olive oil with avocado oil and white balsamic vinegar (just a personal preference).

Ingredients

  • Capicola
  • Smoked Ham
  • Hard Salami
  • Hoagie roll
  • Iceberg lettuce
  • White onion
  • Roma tomatoes
  • Oregano
  • Dried Basil
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Hellman’s mayo
  • White Balsamic vinegar
  • Avocado Oil
  • Provolone cheese

Instructions

I finely sliced my lettuce and white onions, while slicing my tomatoes a little thicker. In a small bowl, I combined all of my vegetables and added 3 tablespoons of avocado oil to 1 tablespoon of white balsamic vinegar. Added salt, pepper, dried basil and oregano. I tossed those making sure all vegetables were thoroughly coated and set aside.

I sliced open my hoagie road with a serrated bread knife. Generously applied Hellman’s mayo to both slices and sprinkled an additional dried basil and oregano. First I layered my meats with each slice overlapping the other. Added the cheese and then my vegetables. Layering the sandwich this way, prevents the meats or the veggies from sliding out from the sandwich. Then placed the hoagie roll on top.

Ideally, it would have been better to wrap the sandwich in parchment paper or foil to allow time for everyone to get to know each other in the sandwich, but as you’ll see in the video, once I sliced it, it was too good not to take a bite.

Enjoy!
