Boujee
Boujee. Taken from Bourgeoisie, a French word that simply means “of middle class status.” But in today’s words, Boujee is hip-hop slang for something “luxurious in lifestyle yet humble in character,” influenced by and often interchanged with the slang bougie.(from dictionary.com)
In the early days of the word, it was associated with consumerism, materialism and pretentious. But after Migos, came out with their song “Bad and Boujee”, it has once again been refined. Only this time, the word has been taken away from the negative connotation it once had to simply mean: simplicity and luxury all in one.
I strive to keep photoshoots simple with regards to props or setups. I often find the simplest of settings with the model at center stage to be my favorite kinds of shoots. It forces me to be creative with poses, hand placement, and facial expressions.
For the shots below, I used a ring light, a pair of sunglasses the model already had on her person, a stool, and a backdrop. While I normally crop out and edit backdrops, this time I decided to keep it in. It gave the photos a more “behind the scenes” look, edgy and not as refined. The composition gives a nice contrast between the edgy background and the beauty of the tall blonde model with blue eyes.
We ended up with a photoshoot we would define as boujee; simplicity and luxury.
